Antique Tub Chairs

There's a theory that the term Tub Chair comes from its shape resembling the old fashioned bath tub, but the term tub is originally American and tub chairs have been around far longer as a style.

That tub chairs are almost always upholstered, often with leather, means once upon a time it would have been a reserve of the wealthy. This does tend to mean that the oldest tub chairs were made by the best craftsmen of their time.

It's considered more likely 'tub' is derived from 'club', and that this style was dominant in the lounges of gentlemen's clubs up and down the land. Today the style remains popular in the foyers of hotels, golf clubs and spas.
